Hayes") as President to an unidentified correspondent, Executive Mansion, Washington, D.C., 29 April l878, one page, 12mo, integral blank, on imprinted stationery, marked "Private" at top, regarding appointments: "I am inclined to send in Rogers for P[ost] M[aster] at North Adams [Mass.] this morning. If you have any additional information which I ought to have please send it here...."; Autograph letter signed ("R.B. Hayes") as President, to Hon. Wayne MacVeagh, Executive Mansion, Washington, D.C., 28 October 1877, one page, large 8vo, integral blank, on imprinted "Executive Mansion" stationery, thanking MacVeagh for "your suggestions and valued letter. Mr. Everts has been much misrepresented in this affair, but I take it the truth will gradually find its way to the public without special action on his part. Excuse want of time to write more fully...."; Autograph letter signed ("R.B. Hayes") to Hon. Wayne MacVeagh, Fremont, Ohio, 9 August 1886, one page, large 8vo, small spot in lower portion, "When a man does a good thing as you did at Yale he is entitled to hear the warmest 'well done.' Prof. Wayland sent me your address before the Law School and I have just finished reading it. It is simply great. The same drift of thought must be in many minds. But nobody has given it utterance. Your speech is pure gold..." In a postscript (signed "H") Hayes sends "a hasty scrawl which I got off last spring which is in the same direction with your noble talk...." (3)
