Beschreibung:

Title: Hearings before the United States Commission on Civil Rights…held in Jackson, Miss., February 16-20, 1965 Author: Place: Publisher: US Government Printing Office Date: 1965 Description: 2 volumes. [I – Voting; II- Administration of Justice], 284 and 517pp. (8vo) original wrappers printed in black. The two volumes were apparently issued separately and are not often found together. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights was created in 1957, but not until the 1960s did the bipartisan group begin to make national headlines with probes of violations of Black voting and legal rights in Alabama and Mississippi (as well as housing discrimination in Chicago and New York). These hearings in Jackson – held while new Civil Rights legislation was being enacted by Congress – pinpointed continuing problems of the segregated South, a dozen local police chiefs and sheriffs being subpoenaed and grilled under oath about official links to racial violence against Blacks. Lot Amendments Condition: Spines and cover edges sunned; very good. Item number: 241847
