HEBREW MANUSCRIPT - Seder Tefillot ke-Minhag Ashkenaz u-Polin (illustrated daily prayerbook according to the German and Polish rites, also including a complete illustrated Passover Haggadah). [London], copied and illustrated by Zanvil ben Joshua of Heitzfeld, 1785-86. Dedicated 1788. Fol. [ 1r]: titlepage, signed by the scribe and dated 1785 Fol. [ 1v]: blank Fol. [ 2r]: dedication page by the scribe to his bride Heve bat Moses of Konigshofen, dated 1788 Fol. [ 2v]: blank Fol. [ 3r- 4v]: prayers upon entering and leaving the synagogue Fol. 1r-132v: text of daily prayers Fol. [c1rv]: blank Fol. [c2r]: titlepage of Haggadah, signed by the scribe and dated 1786 Fol. [c2v]: blank Fol. 1r-45r: text Haggadah Fol. 45v: Seder kapparot [4] + 131 (lacking fol. 31) + [2] + 44 (lacking fol. 2) leaves. Paper, somewhat brittle. Dark brown ink. Fol. 11r: 188 x 146 mm., text: 145 x 122 mm.; varying number of lines per page, all pages within a frame, a single line in text ink in the Siddur and a triple line in red, yellow and red in the Haggadah. Quire structure unclear. Horizontal single catchwords used in the Haggadah only, running titles. Apparently no ruling and pricking. Square Ashkenazic and Yiddish script. Incomplete vocalization, only distinguishing between begedkefet-letters in case of different Ashkenazic pronunciation. Modern calf, two modern paper flyleaves at both ends, front pastedown is original, fol. 44 detached. Colored opening words throughout the manuscript, mostly in red; opening words with single-panel decorated lettering (either the entire word or the first letter) on fols. 2r, 6r, 25r, 36r, 45r, 47v, 68v, 78r, 100r, 101v, 107r, 109v, 113r; Haggadah: 3v, 31r. Fol. [ 1r]: decorated architectural titlepage with naive floral border Fol. 14v: opening word panel 'va-yevarekh', in green and red Fol. 15r: opening word panel 'az' in text ink Fol. 44v: unfinished sketching (original?) Fol. 46v: Kiddush scene in text ink Fol. 61v: opening word panel 'ein' Fol. 99v: full-page multi-colored illustration of Menorah Fol.
