FIRST EDITION of the new High-German translation in prose by Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766), professor in logic and metaphysics at Leipzig university. His translation was based on the first German version, ascribed to Hendrik van Alkmaar (Lübeck, 1498) but in Hackmann's re-edition under the title "Reineke de Vos mit dem Koker" (Wolfenbüttel, 1711; see elsewhere in this catalogue) and also on the Rostock-edition of 1549. The original version as edited in the incunabula-edition of 1498 from Lübeck (from which only 1 complete copy preserved : Wolfenbüttel, Herzog August Library), is here added at the end as a separate part. The present prose translation, with comments by Barckhusen, is preceeded by an extensive literary and historical introduction by Gottsched and was used by Goethe for his own Reynard version. But the greatest quality and attraction of the present edition is the series of the 55 beautiful copper-engravings after Allard van Everdingen (1621-1675), Dutch landscape painter, reworked and augmented with 5 more engravings by Simon Fokke (1712-1784). # Menke VII, 32; # Landwehr F211. -- Édition originale de cette importante version allemande du Roman de Renart basée e.a. sur l'édition de 1498, illustrée de 60 jolis in texto dont 55 d'après Allard van Everdingen.
