Helen Layfield Bradley (1900-1979) It was a warm spring day when we met in Manchester signed with a fly (lower right), signed again, inscribed and dated 'It was a warm Spring Day when we met/in Manchester - Mother, George & I & Grandma/and the two aunts had just arrived outside/the Royal Infirmary on Piccadilly when Miss/Carter (who wore Pink) arrived with Mr Taylor (the Bank/Manager). Everyone thought it so kind of him to/accompany us to Affleck & Browns to buy a carpet./- George & I would have loved to have stayed/with the pigeons, but the shopping had to be done/but, we did stop to buy some delicious Ashton-Moss/celery and Grandma bought some daffodills [ sic ]. Miss Carter/lingered near the Roses but Mr Taylor gave all his/attention to Grandma. There was a man lying on a /bench and a little boy called to a nurse - "Please/come, I'm sure he's dead" so we hurried away & the/year was 1907/Helen Layfield Bradley 1970' (on a label attached to the reverse) oil on canvas laid on board 23¾ x 30 in. (60.3 x 76.2 cm.)
