First edition of a work of tree portraiture. Henry William Burgess had been appointed landscape painter to King William IV of England in 1826, the year before this work appeared. It includes magnificent specimens of individual trees to be found in the grounds of royal and noble estates, including Windsor, Knowle, Woburn Park, Buckland Abbey and elsewhere. Ross and 54 sepia plates after Burgess all on india paper mounted (repaired neat tear in frontis., some spotting, mainly in mounts and intruding into only c. 5 plates). Contemporary green half calf tooled in gilt and blind, speckled edges, by Robert Seton, Edinburgh, Binder to the King, binder’s ticket at front (a few scuff marks discreetly repaired).
