HERALDRY.] -- ARMS OF THE NOBILITY OF FRANCE. Decorated manuscript on paper
HERALDRY.] -- ARMS OF THE NOBILITY OF FRANCE. Decorated manuscript on paper [France, c.1620] 220 x 175mm. 168 leaves plus blanks, INCLUDING APPROXIMATELY 1,340 BLAZONED COATS OF ARMS. 17th-century limp vellum, stamped on upper and lower covers with the arms and titles of Hector le Breton, silk ties. PROVENANCE: 1. Armorial binding of Hector le Breton, Sieur de la Doi[n]neterie, Roy D'armes de France (d.1652). Le Breton accompanied Henri IV at the siege of Amiens, and was later named to a succession of military commands; he was made king of arms of France in 1615, and may well have commissioned the present survey of the French nobility. 2. George G. Napier: ownership note on front free endpaper, recording its purchase from 'Mr Philips in Quaritch, 16 March 1923 ... This most precious volume I saw lying on the floor ...'. CONTENT: 'Recherche de La Plus Grande partye des Armeries et Blasons de S[ieu]rs francoys assavoir Des princes Ducz Marquis Contes Viscontes Barons Et Gentilshomes Avec La plus grande Partye de leurs noms Maysons et provinces dou ilz sont Plus les Armeryes Des Anciens Ducz et Contes de France Et aussy les armeryes des S[ieu]rs qui se Croysirent Avec Godeffroy de Bouillon pour le Voaye de La Terre sainte' [Collection of the greater part of the arms and blazons of the French nobility, that is of the princes, dukes, marquesses, counts, viscounts, barons et gentlemen with the greater part of their names, houses and the regions from which they come With in addition the arms of the old dukes and counts of France and also the arms of the lords who went on crusade to the Holy Land with Godfrey de Bouillon], the arms arranged four to a page, with summary in French of their parts; contrary to the promise of the title page, the volume does not provide information on the names, residences and regional origins of the nobility ff. 1-168. An impressively comprehensive compilation of the arms of the nobility in France: a contemporary annotation on the front free endpaper proudly notes the sheer number of the arms it contains, 'traize cens tant armoiris' [thirteen hundred or so arms], beginning with the king and the royal family, then thirty dukes, through all ranks of nobility to the humble, but numerous, 'Sieurs'. Two appendixes give first the former premier dukedoms and earldoms of France (ff.151-162), and second the arms of the knights who accompanid Godfrey de Bouillon on the 1st Crusade in 1096 (ff.163-168).
