2 volumes with atlas folder Part 1. Illustrated with 52 lithographs, some duotone. and 38 in-text wood engravings. Although the folder for Part 2 is lacking, the maps are complete with 2 tipped into Volume II. 5 folding maps, 3 of which are housed in the atlas folder, as issued. (8vo) 22x14.5 cm (8¾x5¾"), original blindstamped brown cloth lettered in gilt on spines, atlas volume lettered on cover in gilt. First Edition, House of Representatives Issue. One plate in Volume II, Agua Caliente Posta, is inserted as a duplicate. It is inserted where the lacking plate titled Titicaca Balsa should be. Lieutenants Herndon and Gibbon were dispatched in 1851 on an exploration of the Amazon River. The expedition started from Peru and Herndon made a very complete survey of the main branch of the Amazon system. His report, submitted to Congress on Jan. 26, 1853, was printed by the government in 1854. Volume I is by Herndon, Volume II by Gibbon. Plates in Volume I are complete but inserted at variance from the instructions to the binder in the list of plates. Bookplates from the Steve Fossett Collection of Adventure & Exploration. Rubber stamps from another previous owner on front free endpapers and title pages. Maps include: Valley of the Amazon (partially color-outlined).
