Parts 3 and 4 only (of 8), 2° (292 x 206 mm). Two engraved titles. (First title somewhat worn at edges, intermittently pale dampstaining, browning, and spotting.) Contemporary limp vellum (worn). FIRST EDITION OF THIS “HUGE WORK OF ERUDITION” (Delgado-Gomez). A highly important collection of Spanish narratives of exploration and conquest, drawing on some sources no longer extant. An essential work for the study of the discovery, conquest and colonization of America. (See next lot for the first edition in French.) There were further editions of the book in Spain, and translations elsewhere; however, it was not until 1622 that the maps were used again to accompany the text. These were [then] taken from new plates” (Burden 140).
