iv, 316 pp. 17.5x10.8 (7x4¼"), original "gilt extra" blue cloth, all edges gilt, yellow-coated on white endpapers; custom blue cloth jacket, red cloth chemise and red half morocco slipcase. First Edition, First Issue. A rare and remarkable deluxe copy of Longfellow’s epic poem about the great Native American leader Hiawatha, with the contemporary ownership signature of a female reader in the month of publication. Blanck does not record the existence of a blue “gilt extra” binding. The present copy with owner's inscription on front flyleaf, "Mary A. Fisk, Trenton, N.J., Nov. 1855"; a second ownership inscription by Ms. Fisk on the front free endpaper is partially erased. It is the first issue with all BAL first issue points. On p. 279, line five up, the letter "n" which is in some copies of the first issue and lacking in others, is present, though the typeface of the letter appears a little faulty.
