HILKHOT SHECHITAH]. Miscellany volume of treatises on the laws of Shechitah from Morocco. MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER [Morocco, 19th century] 180 x 115 cm. On wove paper. 136 unnumbered leaves (imperfect, see contents). Dark brown ink. North African semi-cursive scripts. (Corners frayed, paper rather brittle, marginal tears, last leaves damaged and crudely repaired, some loss of text, dampstained.) Modern blind and gold-tooled brown morocco, two modern paper flyleaves at back and front. CONTENTS: I. Fols. 1r-93v: Ta'amei halakhot . Explanations of the laws of Shechitah and Terefot based on R. Joseph Karo's Shulchan Arukh ( Yoreh De'ah , 15-58). The end is missing. The author cites, among others, R. Solomon Shoshanah, a rabbi in Marrakech in Morocco at the end of the 18th century. II. Fols. 94r-95r: Three permits to perform Shechitah issued to Jacob ben Makhluf Zano in 5611-5615 (= 1851-1855). The first permit was signed by Shalom Mashsash [?], the second by R. Jacob Abichatsera (Abuchatsera) on 13 Shevat 5615 (= 1855), and the third by Rabbis Masoud ben Menahem Mazal-Tarim, Isaac ben Elijah Mazal-Tarim and Makhluf ben Mordecai, one week later on 20 Shevat 5615. It is almost certain that Rabbi Jacob Abichatsera, who wrote and signed the second permit, is identical with Jacob ben Masoud Abichatsera (1807-1880), the kabbalist and codifier renowned for his great piety. The signature in this manuscript is identical to that in the autograph letter found in the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem, MS Oct. 5529. III. Fols. 95v-106r: Laws of Shechitah and Bedikah in the form of questions and answers. IV. Fols. 106v-109r: Additional laws on the same subject. V. Fols. 110r-113r: Mekoman shel zevachim . Laws of Shechitah in rhyme by David ben Aaron Chassin. First published in the collection of Chassin's poems, printed in Amsterdam in 1807 (Vinograd, Thesaurus , p. 83, no. 235). VI. Fols. 113r-130v: Short treatises on laws of Shechitah according to the custom of Marrakech. VII. Fols. 131r-136v: Another treatise on the same matter in a different hand, incomplete and bound out of order. Fols. 131-136 were copied by Judah ben David Ifragan in 5604 (= 1844) according to a colophon on fol. 132v.
