HILL, Aaron (1685-1750). A Full and Just Account of the Present State of the Ottoman Empire . London: for the author, to be sold by John Mayo, 1709. 2 (342 x 220mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece by H. Hulsbergh and 7 plates, each with a separate leaf of explanation not included in the letterpress gatherings. (Light browning to plates and explanation leaves, *2 with lower corner excised, 2M1 with short tears at lower margin, light marginal soiling, some browning of text towards end.) Contemporary panelled calf, spine in compartments with raised bands (rubbed, joints cracked, spine lacking lettering-piece). FIRST EDITION. Hill had sailed for Constantinople in 1699 where Lord Paget, a relative of his mother's, was ambassador. He was warmly received and sent to travel the East with a tutor. When he returned to England with Lord Paget in 1703, he was aged only 18, and 24 when his book was first published in 1709. The plates illustrate 'the manner of dining among the turks of quality,' a Turkish funeral, the great Seraglio, the 'inward plan of the Seraglio,' a Grecian wedding, 'the catacombs of Egypt,' and an Egyptian hieroglyph. Cf. Blackmer 817 for the second edition of 1710.
