Contemporary limp vellum with overlapping edges, textblock preserving a number of deckle edges, front cover lined with printed waste from a legal edition of the late 15th or early 16th century, two pairs of tawed leather ties (pastedowns partially detached, two ties defective, the rear flap split). Provenance : Paris, Jesuits (17th-century inscriptions on title); Sir William Osler (1849-1919), physician, author and bibliophile (bookplate, purchase note); The Osler Library, McGill University, Montreal (bookplate stamped "Withdrawn"). First edition of the Greek text and Latin translation by Anutius Foes. Foes, a physician of Metz, based his work both on existing editions and his own examination of manuscripts from the French royal library and the Vatican. His work was described thus by Choulant ( Geschichte und Literature der lteren Medicin , Leipzig 1841, p.114): "Text und Uebersetzung noch jetzt am meisten geschzten, auch [die] Anmerkungen sind zahlreich und werthvoll". FROM THE LIBRARY OF SIR WILLIAM OSLER, one of the most distinguished medical collectors of the 20th century. Osler bought the book in Berlin on 5 December 1910, according to a note in his hand on the flyleaf that also identifies Foes and comments on the edition.
