Large 34-star U.S. flag, printed with "The Union Forever," Philadelphia, 1861, in linen, 12.5 x 17 feet (381 x 518 cm). Slight fading, staining, fraying around hoist ties. Provenance: Mulford Pancoast (1861-1915), son of the original owner; De Young Museum, San Francisco, gift of Rose Pancoast, 1917; Sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Made in Philadelphia in 1861, this flag features an applied fabric piece across approximately three-quarters of its width, printed with the motto "The Union Forever" and decorated with bright red and blue stars. The applied section also features the name of the maker: "J. Chase, Printer, 931 So:2nd St:, Philad:" According to museum accession records, the flag was flown by the original owner in Drummondtown (now Accomac), Virginia at the outbreak of the Civil War, but the owner was compelled to take it down, and fled to the North.
