ALL COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND (Lacking 2 preliminary text leaves “Extr. Priv.” and “Introductio in Geographiam” and 3 maps “Picardie,” “Orleans” and “Lionnois,” tiny worm hole to first 40 maps, some minor marginal dampstaining at end.) Contemporary paper-lined brown calf (spine ends and edges renewed). Homann's Grosser Atlas was first published in 1716 by Johann Homann, the founder of the famous Nuremberg map publishing house. It quickly became the standard gentleman's library atlas around Europe, particularly in German-speaking areas, and competed with the productions of the great French map houses of the early 18th century. After Johann's death in 1724 his son ran the business until his death in 1730 and then the firm became Homann Heirs, a combination of family and other geographers who pursued the commercial atlas market with considerable success.
