HOMER (?8th century B.C .). Opera , in Greek. Edited by James Moor and George Muirhead. Glasgow: Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1756-1758. 4 volumes in two, 2º (375 x 235mm). Ruled in red throughout. (As usual without the blank and general title in volume 1, without the half-titles, some spotting.) Late 18th-century English red morocco gilt, probably by Walther, the sides centred with the Devonshire arms within gilt single-rule lozenge and border, the spines with crowned WS in the top compartments, Greek key gilt turn-ins, gilt edges (light scuffing on one board, spines slightly darkened). Provenance : Francis Freeling (1764-1836, postal administrator and bibliophile; neat presentation inscription signed 'F.F. Sept 1811' to:) -- William George Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858; binding, bookplate; sale Christie's, 30 September 1981, lot 224) -- Renato Rabaiotti (bookplate).

THE CHATSWORTH COPY, LARGE-PAPER ISSUE, IN RED MOROCCO . A handsome set of one of the most celebrated and attractive editions of Homer's works.
