HORAE BVM, use of Lyon, in Latin. -- Heures a lusaige de Lyon. Paris: Jean Petit [ca.1503 (almanac for 1503-1520)]. 8° (183 x 115mm). Collation: a-m 8 n 4 A-B 8 C 4 (c2 missigned A2). PRINTED ON VELLUM. Gothic type. 18 large metalcuts (including the title, and the Anatomical Man), 27 small metalcuts, metalcut borders on every page (mostly historiated), all illustrations and the borders of 14 pages ILLUMINATED IN GOLD AND COLOURS BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND, liquid-gold initials on blue or red grounds, yellow capital strokes. Mid 16th-century French light brown calf gilt with traces of oxidised silver, covers with wide ruled and tooled border enclosing a panel with arabesque central lozenge and corner-pieces, with small rectangular ownership panels (lettering erased) above and below the lozenge, all on a field semé with triple dots, vellum doublures and liners, g.e. (spine lacking, extremities scuffed). Provenance : 'Marie...', unidentified 16th-century owner (binding); Rousselet (inscription, dated 1633, noting the gift of the book by Mr. Rousselet); Nicolas Joseph Foucault (1643-1721, armorial bookplate). RARE, not in Bohatta. He lists only 11 Horae for the use of Lyons, and no other Horae produced by Jean Petit in 1503. The Holy Grail device on the title (Renouard 1104, without name on band) was used later by Nicolas Vivien (Mortimer French 299); the Flight into Egypt cut in the Horae by Pigouchet for Vivien (almanac for 1510-30) and also in the 1514 edition by J. de la Roche for G. Eustace (Fairfax Murray French 275, noting that the set from which this cut comes is 'very pretty.. and are very reminiscent of set 3 of Pigouchet-Vostre').
