HORAE, use of Paris (Latin). Hore in laudem beatissime Virginis Marie. Paris: Simon du Bois for Geoffrey Tory, 22 October 1527. 4to in 8s, 217 x 159 mm. (8 9/16 x 6 11/4 in.), dark red crushed levant morocco, covers gilt-tooled to a swirling leafy stem design forming a frame around gilt-lettered title at center of upper cover, imprint on lower cover, spine in six gilt-panelled compartments, lighter red morocco doublures with double gilt fillet panels, large gilt-hatched floral tools at angles of innermost panel, dark fuschia silk liners, board edges gilt, g.e., a few deckle edges, by LORTIC, modern half dark red morocco chemise, matching slipcase; last leaf with repaired 4-inch tear, marginal repairs to last three leaves, discreet small marginal repairs to 4 or 5 other leaves, few minute marginal wormholes, occasional faint traces of marginal dampstaining, washed and pressed, some faint offsetting of red printer's ink . 140 leaves, bâtarde type, title printed in red and black, initials and headings printed in red throughout, printer's "pot cassé" device on titla and on verso of last leaf, each page within a four-part woodcut border of flowers, insects, animals and other ornaments, 13 large outline woodcuts, including the Annunciation on two facing pages. THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF THESE WOODCUTS; they are described as "a la moderne" in the privilege granted to Tory on 23 September 1524 specifically for the use of his woodcuts and printed in his 1525 Horae , which used the woodcuts of his "a l'antique" set. The rather odd combination of gothic type and unshaded Italianate borders and woodcuts suggests that Tory intended the entire edition to be illuminated (cf. Mortimer). A VIRTUALLY UNTRIMMED COPY OF THIS INFLUENTIAL WORK. Provenance : (from Lardanchet, 1935, 35/89).
