Beschreibung:

Horae, use of Rome Thielman Kerver, 1508 HORAE, use of Rome, in Latin and Spanish. Paris: Thielman Kerver, 6 November 1508. An unrecorded Book of Hours published for the Spanish market, with a prayer in Spanish. Especially notable in this copy is the work of a censor, likely a Dominican, who crossed-out several words and passages, including a prayer in Spanish. As with other Horae by Kerver issued after c.1507, most of the large metal-cuts are from his “larger set,” characterized by its “greater freedom from convention in the treatment of the designs, there being an appearance of relief or modelling in comparison with the older cuts: cross-hatching and other forms of shading are introduced” (Davies). Not in Bohatta (1924), Brunet, Lacombe or Moreau. See Davies, Murray French, 267. Octavo (160 x 103mm). Printed on vellum in red and black. 152 leaves. Collation: a-t8 (a1r-a2r table of contents, a2v-a3r two circular diagrams with figures of Saint Peter and Saint James and instructions for determining dominical letter and golden number, a3v explanation of moveable feasts, a4r-v tables for computing moveable feasts, a5r-b8v, c5r Kiss of Judas, f5r Christ and instruments of Passion, g1v Martyrdom of Saint John, g4v Tree of Jesse, g5r Annunciation, h2r Visitation, h7v Nativity, i2r Shepherds, i4v Magi, i6v Presentation, i8v Flight into Egypt, k4r Coronation of the Virgin, l7v Holy Trinity, m5r Resurrection of Lazarus, o7v Anointing of David, q3v Pentecost, r1v Crucifixion, s7v Christ and instruments of Passion (repeat), t3v-t4r prayer in Spanish, t4v Attributes of the Virgin, t8r colophon, t8v Kerver device). 19 large cuts (one repeated), plus printer’s device with title at end, and 34 smaller cuts of scenes of the Passion, Evangelists and saints, all pages within multi-piece historiated and ornamental border, many with criblé background, initials painted in gold on blue and red grounds, space fillers in blue and red, text hand-ruled in red (upper margin and fore-edge trimmed close, with slight loss to border on a few leaves). Modern red morocco gilt-tooled in Renaissance style by Miquel Rius, Barcelona (ink stamp dated 1948), doublures and silk endpapers, edges gilt (spine extremities lightly rubbed); modern quarter morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance: Andrés Roure Gili (1911-1996; bookplate) – acquired from Librairie Lardanchet, Paris, 23 August, 1979.
