UNCORRECTED PROOFS OF THE FIRST EDITION, WITH SEVERAL CORRECTIONS BY BOTH HUGHES AND SYLVIA PLATH. INSCRIBED BY HUGHES on the half-title: "In the Faber photograph of MacNeice, Auden, myself, Spender, Eliot this is the book sticking out of my pocket. The copy of the extra poem Mayday in Holderness is the one used by the printer." WITH THIS TYPESCRIPT LAID-IN. [ With: ] HUGHES, Ted. Typed statement signed ("Ted Hughes"), n.p., n.d. 1 page, 4 o, neatly folded . Hughes reiterates the statement above regarding this proof copy and adds details relating to the history of the book's publication. Regarding the poem "The Bull Moses," Hughes writes: "T.S. Eliot made one of his few editorial suggestions about that piece--he pointed out the undesirable assonance of 'black' and 'back' in the sixth line from the end--and set a question mark to it."
