Mid 20th century. Expressive figure. Not signed but attributed to I Nyoman Tjokot (1888 – 1971), born in Djati, Gianyar, Bali. He gained his inspiration for his work from sacred Hindu texts and folk legend. He found the pieces of wood and branches that he used in his sculptures in the woods or along the water’s edge. And usually he could already picture the image that he was going carve in there. He would never chop off a branch from a living tree. His style was primitive and expressionistic. Provenance: Mrs. M.A. Levelt, Board Member of the Bataviasche Kunstkring, Batavia. H 24 cm. Small wood chip.
