Civil War identification disc, 1.25 in. dia., brass, with obverse patriotic shield and battle names, "Chancellorsville / Gettysburg." Surrounding text reads, "The Union And The Constitution / War of 1861." Reverse stamped, "Sgt. A.S. Jones. / Co. E. / 3d Wis. V. / E.S. April 22. / 1861. / Winchester. / Cedar Mount'n. / Antietam." Drilled hole present at top. Augustine S. Jones enlisted in May of 1861 as a private and mustered into Co. E, 3rd Wisconsin Infantry. He sustained a wound to his shoulder during the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862 and was consequently hospitalized in Philadelphia, PA. He must have made enough of a recovery to rejoin his company the next year, however, as he is marked as being present during the Battle of Gettysburg. Jones was promoted twice throughout his years of service, ultimately to the rank of sergeant. Condition: Some wear and darkening to surface.
