56-56 caliber, serial number 4960 belonging to 2nd Lieutenant Edwin Churchill, Co. D 17th Indiana. Top of receiver marked Spencer Repeating Arms Co. Boston, Mass Patented March 6, 1860. According to the Springfield Research Service this Spencer rifle is in the serial range of the rifles issued to the 17th and 72nd Indiana and the 92nd and 123rd Illinois Infantry. Each of these units was part of Wilder's Mounted Infantry. Churchill mustered into Company D of the 17th Indiana on June 12, 1861 and served the entire war, mustering out on August 8, 1865. His entire service was with company K, and on November 24, 1864, shortly after the battle of Farmington, Tennessee, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant. Churchill was with Wilder's Brigade at each of their major actions, including Chickimagua.With his original promotion to 2nd Lt., a copy photograph of Churchill as a 2nd Lt, and his complete service and pension records, along with other genealogical information. Condition: All metal surfaces are a nice even dark brown finish. Markings are very sharp. Wood showing wear dents and mars.
