[ILLUMINATION.] NEWEY, H.W. Cover title: Address Presented to D.J. O'Neill, Birmingham, 1913. [Birmingham: Morton & Newey, 1913-1914.] Small folio (343 x 263 mm). 5 illuminated leaves on vellum by Newey, decorative borders and miniatures in gouache heightened in gold, 7 manuscript leaves listing names, text within deocrated gold and green, orange, blue, or yellow borders. Numerous photographs mounted to leaves throughout. Original red morocco gilt by Morton & Newey; original box. ILLUMINATED ADDRESS, presented to D. J. O'Neill by the town of Birmingham in gratitude for his public service. O'Neill, who is best known for his role in preserving Aston Hall in Birmingham, was remembered in his 1914 Birmingham Gazette obituary as "The Friend of the Poor" and "one of the most interesting personalities in the public and social life of Birmingham for upwards of half a century." Tipped in are photographs and signatures including a photograph SIGNED BY PRINCESS ALEXANDRA accompanied by a letter from her secretary. [ Laid in :] various manuscripts and ephemera relating to O'Neill and Birmingham. Estimate $ 700-900
