PROVENANCE: The artist's estate, Kuokkola This freely executed and vibrant oil sketch relates to an enormous ((293 x 526cm.) picture Repin worked on in the 1890s, called Get thee behind me, Satan! which was exhibited at the Society of Itinerant Painters exhibition of 1901. The painting itself was destroyed by fire in Kharkov during the Second World War. Other sketches for the same painting are in the Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, the Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow the Musée des Beaux Art in Calais and in a private collection in Prague.
