Description: Imperial German Mauser 98/05 Butcher Bayonet with Sawback Edge Removed, being a good standard model with two piece wooden slab grips, steel pommel and cross guard. Housed in its steel scabbard. Single edged blade with fuller to the back. Where the sawback edge has been removed it has taken away the date stamp. Stamped to the edge with acceptance marks. Made by H Mundlos & C Magdeburg. Blade measures 37 cms, overall 52 cms. During the war the sawback blade was considered to be barbaric, due to the damage it caused when removed from the body of a allied soldier. As such the British and French high command, let it be known that all German prisoners found to have a sawback edged bayonet would be tortured and executed. As a result of this the German high command ordered in 1917 that all sawback edges were to be removed from bayonets. Categories: WW1 German Militaria
