Au centre, une fleur de grenade ou fleur de rumi, est épaulée de feuilles de saz émergeant d'un réseau d'arabesques aux fleurons bilobés. (Petits éclats). Turquie Iznik, vers 1560 37 x 20 cm Les couleurs de ce carreau sont exactement celles que l'on retrouve dans la Mosquée Rustem Pasha, construite en 1561-2. Malgré le grand nombre de motif présent dans ce bâtiment, ce motif précis n'y est pas. La qualité de ce carreau indique qu'il était destiné à un batiment important, probablement un de ceux commandités par Soliman et réalisés par le grand architecte Sinan. A very large rectangular Iznik border tile, Turkey, circa 1560. with bevelled edge the white ground painted with blue and turquoise arabesques with small red highlights within black outlines interlaced with spiralling blue and red tendrils issuing saz leaves and linking large palmettes, a rope-pattern border above. The colours of this tile are exactly those used in the mosque of Rustem Pasha of 1561-2. Despite the great proliferation of tiles in the mosque however the present design does not appear at all. It is probable it was made for one of the other major constructions of the period. Its size coupled with the quality of the execution make it certain it originally formed part of one of the grandest buildings commissioned at the time.
