FAMOUS WORK ON HYDRAULICS. FONTANA, CARLO. Utilissimo trattato dell'acque correnti diviso in tre libri,... Rome (Giovanni Francesco Buagni) 1696. Folio (350x245 mm). (16), 196, (11, 1 blank, 4) pp. 80 half page engravings and 2 folding engraved plates A. Specchi (all, some minor foxing, 2 engravings browned, 1 with some inkstains; text with minor foxing, mostly in the beginning, small tear to one margin). Contemporary vellum, covers warped, spine in compartments, handwritten title on spine, partly rubbed and worn, damaged to upper part of spine. Signature of C. V. Hårlin dated Roma 1726. Bookplate of Gunnar Wennerberg. Photo. Berlin Kat. 3613. First edition of this important work on hydraulics. Based on Fontinus, De Aquaeductibus Urbis Romae, one of the few surviving ancient texts on hydraulics, as well as on the recent discoveries of Benedetto Castelli and Evangelista Torricelli. Complete with the bifolium of Capitoli aggunti (discussing the pressure of water and air), which is sometimes lacking. Provenance: Gunnar Wennerberg (1817-1901), Swedish composer, poet and politician. Wennerberg was the grandmother's father of the present owner. Probably bought by Wennerberg on his last travel to Italy in 1860.
