On August 1st, 1829 François Buloz created the Revue des Deux Mondes. It was the first "modern" publication of the 19th century. Since 1830 it has welcomed ideas related to France and the world emanating from other European countries. The Revue des Deux Mondes is an independent bi-monthly publication which promotes the universal right to vote. Its views on contemporary society are portrayed through historical essays and writings which opposed censorship during the Second Empire. Therefore, the Revue des Deux Mondes promotes literary and artistic creation (the first publication of Baudelaire's Les fleurs du mal appeared within its pages), and publishes important political debates and travel tales as well. Many leading authors of the period were published in the Revue, including: Abd el-Kader, Balzac, Baudelaire, Claude Bernard, Stendhal, Bourget, Chateaubriand, Benjamin Constant, Fenimore Cooper, Eugène Delacroix Maxime du Camp Alexandre Dumas, Théophile Gautier Gérard de Nerval, Guizot, Thiers, Henri Heine, Victor Hugo Lamartine, Ernest Lavisse, Mérimée, Michelet, Musset, Renan, Taine, Sainte-Beuve, George Sand Tocqueville, Tourgueniev, and Vigny… In 1914, 40 000 people subscribed to the Revue. It had considerable influence throughout Europe. Up until the eve of the Second World War, the Revue enjoyed an international reputation. Its readership included top political, economic and social leaders. At the beginning of the XX° century, The Revue des Deux Mondes aimed to present progressive yet tempered content. It focused on issues including social harmony, the rise in external threats, socialism, anticlericalism, and the discovery of the Americas, Asia and other European societies. Then, in the 30’s, the Revue praised the social progress which occurred as a result of Parliament's actions, but opposed Blum for his links with the communists.Hostile to socialism, it expressed concerns as communism began to grow in Russia. Long before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Revue showed reticence concerning Mussolini's and Hitler's desires for expanding power. From 1948 on, the Revue was a point of reference in the French press, but its influence has steadily decreased. Directed by Jean Jaudel, it was in direct competition with other publications such as Esprit, la NRF, les Temps Modernes... (www.revuedesdeuxmondes.fr)
