INDEX LIBRORUM PROHIBITORUM -- FRANCIS I, Emperor of Austria, as King of Lombardo-Venetia. Catalogo de' Libri Italiani o tradotti in Italiano prohibiti negli stati di Sua Maestà l'Imperatore d'Austria. Venice: Pietro Pinelli, Stampatore Imperiale Regio, 1815. 4 o (247 x 195 mm). Interleaved, as issued. Original flexible boards (bookblock cracked in a few places). Provenance : Stralcio Libri Venecia (old ink stamp on preliminary blank). This catalogue marks the beginning of the suppression of freedom of expression and political thought in the Italian dominions of Austria, which was to endure for half a century. The roughly 750 works are divided in two classes; each entry is assigned to one of these classes in one of two columns in the outer margins: Class I, some 570 titles, were books which booksellers were prohibited from dealing in outright; Class II could be sold to those furnished with a Government license to buy them (these included, e.g. Goethe's Werther, and Moses Mendelssohn's Jerusalem ). The main class, I, included sixteenth and seventeenth-century editions of Aretino, Bandello, Bruno, Firenzuola, Ochino (10), Ovid, Pallavicino (9), Marini (13), Strapparola, &c., eighteenth and nineteenth-century publications comprise works by Condorcet, Diderot, works on freemasonry (13), heterodoxica, and many political works. This catalogue was published immediately on the establishment of Austria's Italian kingdom in April, 1815. Ottino & Fumagalli, 5683; not in Reusch Index.
