An Indian Mutiny and Burma Archive to Major-General Walter Rowlandson who took part in the actions of Serowlie and Gurra and the re-occupation of Humeerpur during the Indian Mutiny and later commanded one of the columns in the attacks on the batteries on 16 November 1885 in Burma Pair: Indian Mutiny 1857-58, 1 clasp, Central India (Lieut W. Rowlandson. 17th Regt N.I.) with silver riband buckle, claw a little loose, India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp Burma 1885-(Colonel W. Rowlandson 12th Madras Infy), neatly engraved in running script, both medals attractively toned and about extremely fine, together with Original printed obituary and newspaper cuttings relating to the recipient's funeral, four large black and white photographs of the recipient in uniform, including one in his earlier years wearing 17th Regiment Native Infantry uniform plus two black and white photographs of the recipient as a civilian in later life. A small booklet written by the recipient titled 'English-And-Hinddostani, A Vocabulary of Words and Phrases likely to occur in the Extracts given by the Examiners at Madras for translation into Hindoostani' published in 1868, 8vo with related documents (Rowlandson is recorded as being an interpreter in Hindustani in 1861). Commission documents for the rank of Lieutenant, Captain and Major, the record of officer's services to the recipient. Eight original drawings and watercolours executed by other family members including a pencil drawing showing Grasmere Church and Village by C R 1833, 12 x 19cm, mounted on card, various letters, documents and related military ephemera to other members of the Rowlandson family plus four cased photographs and a bible published in 1825 and inscribed with family history. (Qty: 2 ) Major-General Walter Rowlandson (1838-1896) was born in Bangalore, India, and entered the "John" Company's service aged 17. He joined the 17th Madras Native Infantry on 15 March 1855 and served with the regiment during the Indian Mutiny 1857-58, where he took part in the actions of Serowlie and Gurra and the re-occupation of Humeerpur. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1858, Captain (without purchase) 1865, Captain (without purchase) 1874, and Lieutenant-Colonel 1874, he advanced to Major-General in 1890. He took command of the 12th Madras Infantry and took the regiment to Burma in 1885 where he took part and commanded one of the columns in the attacks on the batteries on 16 November 1885, and also in the subsequent advance up the river Irrawady to Mandalay and Bhamo. During his service, he acted in various extra regimental appointments, such as Acting Deputy Assistant Commissary General in the Commissariat Department from 22 October 1867 to 1 December 1871, for good service in which a special government order was published. He also acted as superintendent of the gaol at Salem in 1873. Rowlandson resided in Kent and died at his residence, the Gables, New Romney, Kent on 30 June 1896 having suffered an injury from a riding accident.
