Indistinctly signed 18thC Portrait School, Watercolour and pencil in arch shaped mount, Mrs. Lyde Brown and her daughter Charlotte...', Signed and dated ? lower left, Label verso reads 'Mrs Lyde Brown (Dorothy Riou, sister of Edward and Philip and daughter of Stephen Riou and her daughter Charlotte Riou Browne who married Mr. George Benson of Lutwych', 14 1/2 x 11 1/2" Stephen Riou's son Edward (1762-1801) was one of the the most distinguished Naval officers of his generation. He died aboard HMS Amazon, of which he was captain, at the battle of Copenhagen, having, unlike his friend Nelson, withdrawn as ordered by the fleet commander. There is a memorial to him in St. Paul's Cathedral (Part of resume verso)
