American, late 19th century. A J. & E. Stevens cast iron mechanical bank of an elephant and three clowns, marked U.S. PAT. AUG. 8, 1882 / ENG. PAT. JULY 28, 1882 on underside. Place coin between clown's rings and move other clown's legs to move the elephant's trunk and strike the coin to deposit it, while the top clown turns; ht. 5.5, wd. 5, dp. 2.75 in. Condition: Fluorescent under blacklight: outfit on top clown, limbs of other two clowns, and parts of the tusks. Paint loss, especially to base and clowns. Could use a cleaning.
