One illustration in text. (Title slightly torn at lower margin, occasional thumb-soiling.) Original blue cloth gilt with vignette on upper cover (inner hinges split). FIRST EDITION. Six months' travel spent on leave from Columbia University in the first half of 1903 was followed up by 3 years of research for publication of this book. Zoroastrianism was a special interest. "The student of Zoroastrianism ... will find many points to consider in connection with this work, especially the numerous identifications suggested for ancient sites, or explanations proposed for doubtful passages in the literature" (preface p. ix); and two others (A. JACKSON. From Constantinople to the Home of Omar Khayyam , New York, 1911; and E. Crawshay WILLIAM. Across Persia , London, 1907, presentation copy). (2)
