Beschreibung:

(Jackson, Andrew)(Overton, John). A Vindication of the Measures of the President and His Commanding Generals, in the Commencement and Termination of the Seminole War. By a Citizen of the State of Tennessee. Washington: Gales & Seaton, 1819 8vo (202 x 128 mm). Some toning and foxing. Modern half polished calf, marbled boards, morocco gilt label on spine, edges stained yellow. Andrew Jackson's own copy of a work concerning his actions in the First Seminole War. Andrew Jackson's personal copy, with his ownership signature at the top of the title-page, of a work essential to his career. After the events surrounding Jackson's unauthorized invasion of Florida (then still a Spanish possession), he was harshly attacked by his political enemies, and this work lays out the defense of his actions. The author (Howes attributes the work to John Overton) offers a defense of Jackson's invasion of Florida during the Seminole War, which was attacked by his political enemies. This work lays out the defense of Jackson's invasion of Florida during the Seminole War, which was attacked by Abner Lacock in his Report to the Select Committee. This is the second edition, after the first printed that same year in Nashville, which Howes notes is known in only three copies. Books signed by early Presidents are rare on the market, but rarer still are those signed by Presidents who play such a central role in the subject matter of the book. In Jackson's case, very few books owned by him have ever appeared on the market. Many books from his library are still at the Hermitage. In 2013, Jackson's copy of an 1838 edition of Washington's Farewell Address was sold at Sotheby's New York (4 June 2013, lot 93, $37,500). A remarkable Presidential association copy. PROVENANCECharles R. Sanders Jr. (bookplate on lower pastedown) REFERENCECelebration of My Country 161; Allen 429; Field 1163; Howes O158; Sabin 99811; Shaw & Shoemaker 49002
