This painting has been in the collection of the art collector Mr. R.A.W.J.J. Cremers in The Hague. It was offered in his auction at Frederik Muller & Cie in the Doelenstraat, Amsterdam, on 26 October 1920 as lot 16 'Claire de lune'; the painting remained unsold. Since then the work stayed in the family until now. In this 'vente publique' of the 'Tableaux et Aquarelles Modernes' from the collection of Mr. R.A.W.J.J. Cremers, the painting was described as 'Un des chefs- d'oeuvre du maître', one of the masterpieces of the artist.
