Collation: [1 8; 2 1 0 3-5 8 6 6 7-8 8 9 6 10-11 8 12 6 13-14 8 15 6 16-17 8 18 6 19-20 8 21 6 22-23 8 24 6 25-26 8 27 1 0 (1/1r table, 1/1v index, 1/8v blank; 2/1r text, 27/10r colophon, 27/10v blank). 206 leaves. Leaves 2/1-27/9 with printed foliation Folium primum-CLxxxxvii. 42 lines and headline, double column. Type: 2:105G. Three- to eight-line initial spaces. Rubricated with red Lombard initials and paragraph signs. (Some worming throughout, occasional light staining.) Contemporary South-German blind-tooled leather over wooden boards (some worming, worn, repaired and rebacked, tear to headcap), evidence of two clasps; the back pastedown a leaf (11/3) from Schönsperger and Rger's 1482 edition of Die Neue Ehe , chancery 2 o (288 x 190 mm). Provenance : Lioardus Moser: contemporary inscription on flyleaf ( Iste liber est Lioardi Moser quem acomodavit sibi amicus suus plebanus in Lerner ) -- Munich, Franciscans: 17th-century inscription on 1/1r, stamp "STAM" on top edge of bookblock -- Munich, Royal Library: marked Duplum on flyleaf; shelfmark "N:161" -- Brooklyn Public Library: bookplate, stamps on top and tail-edges of bookblock. An early edition of the cycle of sermons for the feasts of the saints by Jacobus de Voragine, who is better known for his Golden Legend, an extremely popular and influential account of the lives of the saints. Herman Kästlin printed in Augsburg from 1479 to 1485. No more than ten books and some broadsides from his press are extant, and all are quite rare. The pastedown in this volume is a leaf from Die neue Ehe und das Passional von Jesu printed in Augsburg in 1482 by Johann Schönsperger and Thomas Rger (H 4059*; BMC III, 860 (IB. 6273); BSB-Ink. N-24; GW 9250; Goff E-16). ISTC locates only four copies of this edition, at the University of North Carolina, Freiburg im Breisgau, the British Library and the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, of which the last two are imperfect.
