FIRST EDITION. James Grant, Scottish soldier and explorer, joined the Indian army and eventually reached the rank of colonel. He saw service at the battle of Gujerat, the Indian Mutiny, and in the Abyssinian campaign of 1868. With John Hanning Speke, he explored the sources of the Nile (1860-63), and made important botanical collections. On Speke's death in 1864, he became the main spokesnman for the expedition, becoming a leading African specialist.
