JAMES, Frank. Autograph letter signed ("Frank James") to Charles Fletcher, "In Jail at Gallatin Mo.", 17 July 1883. 2 pages, 8vo, IN INK, minor splitting at folds, small tear from right edge . WRITING FROM JAIL, JAMES COMPLAINS "I AM WORN OUT AND DISGUSTED WITH THIS KIND OF LIFE" After a fifteen-year crime spree during which the James brothers consistently avoided capture, Frank James decided to surrender himself to law officials after the murder of his brother Jesse. From the Gallatin, Missouri jail, awaiting trial, James congratulates Fletcher on his recent marriage: "You have proved that you are an angler of the first rates. That was certainly a splendid catch and I regret very much that I was not at the fry [the wedding] at least. However, allow me to congratulate you. I also extend my sympathy to Mr. McKenny and hope that he may yet live to carry off the prize from an other one of these days." He explains that he is being treated as well as could be expected, but that he anticipates freedom: "I am getting along as well as could be expected circumstansed as I am. The Sheriff treats me kind and my imprisonment is the only thing I complain of. I am worn out and disgusted with this kind of life." James is anxious to be tried: "I will certainly be glad when the 20th of August arrives at that time I hope to get a trial. I hope you [will] be in Mo at that time and attend, I should love to see the 'old guard' well represented upon that day." James was found not guilty during his trial in Missouri. He was subsequently acquitted on charges of armed robbery in Alabama and retired to his family's Missouri farm, where he lived quietly until his death in 1915.
