A quarter plate daguerreotype of James Johnston wearing large vestments that apparently designate him as the President of the Scots Thistle Society, accompanied by a hand-written note that identifies him as such, with mat stamped Van Loan; plus a black Scots Thistle Society ribbon, 7.5 in. long. Founded in 1796 and disbanded in 1976, the Scots Thistle Society, like so many other early immigrant organizations, was formed as a benevolent society to provide aid to its members during economic hardships. Purchased directly from the family. Condition: Light scum along left side of plate; light tarnish ring along perimeter; image housed in full case with repaired hinge.
