Venice: Johannes and Gregorius de Gregoriis de Forlivio, (I:) 1497 (II:) 25 August 1498. First edition of Jerome’s Biblical commentary. This set of commentaries accompanies the irascible saint’s Latin translation of the Bible. The woodcut border by Benedetto Bordone first appeared in an edition of Herodotus printed by the same press in 1494. Full woodcut border with vignette depicting Hercules at the Crossroads; large and small woodcut initials, two woodcut printer’s devices (some dampstaining and toning, some leaves spotted, inkstains and some soiling, small repairs to blank corners and wormhole repairs in vol. 2, beginning of preface of Isaiah soiled with top and bottom margins renewed, final leaf soiled and chipped with small repair to blank area). Modern brown morocco. Provenance: marginalia in several hands – partially effaced ownership inscription in vol. 2 from Mantua – acquired from Leo S. Olschki, Florence, 28 December 1965.
