Beschreibung:

Jim Thorpe (1887-1953). American athlete of both American Indian and European ancestry and Olympic gold medalist. Clipped signature, 1.5 x 2.5 in. (sight), matted and framed together with eight copy photographs and prints of Thorpe at various moments through his life and career as an athlete. 32.75 x 38 in. overall. Accompanied by a notarized letter of authenticity issued by James Spence Authentication in April, 2010. Thorpe is, of course, best known as one of the most versatile athletes of the 20th century. He won Olympic gold medals in 1912 in the decathlon and pentathlon, only to have them taken away for a violation of amateurism regulations (posthumously restored 1983). He played professional football and baseball for a while, but his career was lackluster at best. After that he went from job to job, including working as a movie extra (usually playing an Indian Chief in Westerns). He nearly lost one of those roles because of his "beer gut," with the producers insisting he lose weight before playing yet another Indian Chief. Thorpe's alcoholism took its toll on more than his body, contributing to unstable marriages as well as his lack of steady work. Condition: Signature remains clear and legible. Beautifully matted and framed.
