JOHANN CARL PARICIUS (1705-1760), Kaiserliche Stamm-Rose des Allerdurchleuchligsten Erz-Hauses Osterreich , presented to the Emperor Charles VI on his name day, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
JOHANN CARL PARICIUS (1705-1760), Kaiserliche Stamm-Rose des Allerdurchleuchligsten Erz-Hauses Osterreich , presented to the Emperor Charles VI on his name day, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM Regensburg, 1731 625 x 385mm. One bifolium written in Fraktur in black and liquid gold with, on f.1, dedication to Charles VI within the imperial eagle, a medallion suspended from its claws, all in figurative interlace, containing a dedicatory poem to Charles VI and, on f.2, a rose tree drawn in green and black with figurative interlace forming buds in green and flowers in red or liquid silver (or metal), each flower containing a bust portrait of a Habsburg Emperor from Rudolph I to Charles VI at the top, rising from a vase of red interlace containing the title, signature and date (slight cockling, some wear to margins). In folder within half-morocco brown solander box. Johann Carl Paricius, who signed as notary and arithmetician, is now best known for his history of Regensburg which appeared in 1753. He was probably trained in calligraphy by Georg Heinrich Paricius (1685-1740), a Schreib- und Rechen-meister , master of writing and mathematics, who may have been his father. As a Free Imperial Town, Regensburg had a very direct relationship with the Emperor, who was presumably presented with the Stamm-Rose on January 28, the feast day of St Charlemagne, the first Holy Roman Emperor and Charles VI's patron saint. Charles (1685-1740) had succeeded his brother Joseph, who appears below him to the right, in 1711. The Rose is not a conventional family tree, since the branches do not indicate relationship, but it is a suitably flattering gift which presents Charles VI as the culmination of the Habsburg dynasty in an imposingly grand yet decorative format. It was also prophetic, for the marriage of Charles's elder daughter, Maria Teresa, took the imperial crown to the house of Lorraine.
