JOHANNES CHRYSOSTOMUS (pseudo-). Sermo super psalmum L: Miserere mei Deus . [Cologne: Ulrich Zel, ca 1467]. Chancery half-sheet 4 o (199 x 133mm). Collation : [1-3 8 4 6 ] (1/1r text, 4/6 blank). 30 leaves. 4 pin-holes (only the pair in lower margins preserved). Gothic type 1:96 (leaded to about 104), rounded h throughout. 27 lines. 4-line manuscript initial P in blue with penwork decoration extending into the margin to start bk I, similar 4-line initial R in red to bk II, other smaller initials alternately in blue and red, yellow capital-strokes, 2-line rubricator's heading on 1/1r. Modern calf, Sexton arms on sides, 18th-century gilt spine laid down. Quarter-morocco box. Provenance : [Sotheby's 14th March 1967, lot 56, to Maggs] -- Eric Sexton (bookplates), sold at Christie's New York, 8th April 1981, lot 45 -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 19 April 1982. FIRST COMPLETE EDITION. The textual transmission of this Latin sermon, traditionally misattributed to Chrysostom, is in two books. Zel's earliest dated edition (1466) contains book I only (VK 648). Gothic type 1:96 (leaded to about 109), mostly rounded h, but tailed h on many versos. 28 lines. Printed heading, otherwise same rubrication. FIRST EDITION.
