Collation: [1 10 2 8 (1/1 table, 2/8 blank); 3-10 10 11 12 12-16 10 17-18 8 ; 19-28 10 29 10 (+-3) 30 12 (3/1 blank, 3/2 text, 30/12 blank)]. 298 leaves. 35 lines, double column. Type: 2:115G. 6-line initials in red with brown and red penwork decoration, 3-line initials, paragraph marks, capital strokes and underlining in red. 3 pinholes per page: upper and lower inside margin, upper corner. (Some staining, mostly marginal, heavier in table quires, small wormhole in final quire.) Contemporary calf over bevelled wooden boards, sides diapered with triple fillets, early vellum flyleaves, two brass fore-edge clasps (restored, with much of the leather replaced, by Sidney Cockerell, March 1972). Provenance : The Hague, Royal Library (stamp and cancellation) -- T.B. Reed, typographer (bookplate, stamp, given to:) -- London, St. Bride's Foundation, Passmore Edwards Library, Reed Collection 1900 (stamps) -- sale Sotheby's, 22 June 1995, lot 287. FIRST EDITION. John of Bromyard was a leading English 14th-century theologian, who took a prominent role in the condemnation of the doctrines of John Wyclif. His Opus trivium is a compendium of theology, civil and canon law, arranged for convenient reference for priests.
