Full-page woodcut armillary sphere, woodcut diagrams in the text, Giunta device at end, woodcut initials. (Occasional light dampstain or spotting.) 17th-century vellum over thin pasteboard, title lettered on spine in two hands and along lower edges (lightly stained, rubbed at extremities). Provenance : occasional 16-17th-century annotations -- Bibliotheca Privata Pasquale Regina (ink stamp on flyleaf). Owing to its great renown, influence and utility, the Sphaera mundi attracted detailed commentaries throughout the ages. The present edition prints the majority of commentaries on the text, from the 12th-century Michael Scotus, to the 14th-century Cecco d'Ascoli, to the late 15th-century Lefèvre d'Etaples, to contemporary Joannes Baptista Capuanus and Bartolomaeus Vespuccius and includes Regiomontanus's criticism of it. Scotus published a nearly identical compilation in January of the same year, and it was this superior text which Thorndike choses for his modern edition of 1949 ( The Sphere ... and its commentators ).
