John was probably the most famous artist of his age and one of the biggest characters of any age. In his marvelous series of novels, Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powell based his bohemian painter, Mr. Deacon, on Augustus John At the Slade he was recognised as the most talented draughtsman of his generation. Recently the BBC produced a programme highlighting the two years John and James Dickson Innes spent painting the mountain, Arenig Fawr and the area around it entitled 'The Mountain that had to be Painted'. John was always renowned for his drawings and etchings, an art form that suited this hugely gifted draughtsman.
