JOHN, DUKE OF BEDFORD, BEFORE ST GEORGE, hand-coloured and gilded print on vellum, taken from Richard Gough An Account of a Rich Illuminated Missal executed for John, Duke of Bedford... in the Possession of the Late Duchess of Portland . London: J. Nichols for T.Payne, 1794, 227 x 173mm (slight flaking to background). Mounted and framed. Richard Gough's detailed account of the famous Bedford Hours, now in the British Library, has acquired its own fame as the first monograph in English on an illuminated manuscript. Gough himself wanted his publication to approach the élite luxury of the original, since he had copies printed on vellum with the three illustrations hand-coloured. See A.N.L. Munby, Connoisseurs and Medieval Miniatures 1750-1850 , 1972.
