John French Sloan American, 1871-1951 Blonde on Blue, 1928 American, 1871-1951 Blonde on Blue, 1928 Signed John Sloan (lr); inscribed on the reverse Blonde on Blue/John Sloan/N.Y. -1928 Oil on masonite 20 x 25 7/8 inches Provenance: Mrs. Cyrus McCormick Exhibited: Santa Fe, New Mexico, Museum of New Mexico, John Sloan Exhibition of Paintings, June 1-15, 1941, no. 5 Literature: Rowland Elzea, John Sloan's Oil Paintings: A Catalogue Raisonne, Part Two, Newark, DE, University of Delaware Press, 1991, cat. no. 847, illustrated, also listed as Blonde Nude on Bed, Blue Background For more than twenty years, John Sloan focused on studies of the female nude, creating a series of unusual and intriguing images. In John Sloan's Women, A Psychoanalysis of Women, Janice M. Coco suggests that these works reveal the painter's intimate connection to his models - despite his attempts to maintain an objective distance from them. Blonde on Blue is a classic example of his painted nudes of the late 1920s, the foreshortened reclining figure rendered with broad, expressive brushstrokes in tones of pink and yellow. As are other figures in this series, she is nearly enveloped by lavish draperies in a symphony of pastel hues. Estate of Ernest Shapiro
Frame rubbing with some minor losses along bottom edge and corners. Could use a light cleaning. Tiny spot of inpainting at bottom center. No further apparent restoration.
