John Frost American, 1890-1937 Tranquil Reflections, 1935 Signed John Frost and dated '35 (lr); dated March 29, 35 on the reverse Oil on board 19 x 23 inches Literature: Phil Kovinick, John Frost A Quiet Mastery, p. 169, illus p. 179 Having suffered from tuberculosis for more than twenty years, John Frost entered the Allenwood Sanatorium in central Pennsylvania for treatment. Following his discharge from the Sanatorium, in late 1935, he returned to his family's estate near Bryn Mawr. Frost's biographer Phil Kovinick writes of this period, "Following his return from the Allenwood Sanatorium, Jack was improved but never enjoyed robust health. Despite his condition, compounded by the financial problems of the estate, he sketched throughout most of the remainder of the year. Extant dated and signed canvases from this period are few. The already-mentioned On the Brodhead, featured in The Sportsman, is one. Others are In the Stream (1935) also a sporting subject, and Tranquil Reflections, an oil on board depicting an estate scene, providing mute evidence that Jack was painting in a much looser style, using broad brushstrokes. The latter work is inscribed "March 29, 1935" on the back. A number of other extant renderings in this freer style, undated and unsigned, also were executed at the time." [Phil Kovinick, John Frost A Quiet Mastery, p. 169] C
Frame rubbing. Scattered touches of inpaint in the sky, a touch in the brush at the far center right and a touch in the water.
